BARREN

Anchor 1

Barren contemplates the conventions of landscape images such as horizon line, structure, and the negotiation of foreground and background composition. These notions are used to draw parallels between the skeletal anatomy of nature’s creatures and the structure of the natural landscape.

The ridges and recesses in the skulls are transformed into hills, valleys, plateaus, caves and even glaciers. The negative space in the frame fills the role of open sky and still water. The near symmetry of the skulls is suggestive of the sort of reflections one might see in a pond or lake.

Of somewhat post-apocalyptic complexion, this sense of place lays the groundwork from which narrative naturally comes forth. One can imagine themself wandering in these barren lands or imagine those that perhaps once inhabited them.
